CHICAGO - Last semester, Loyola University Chicago student-athletes compiled a remarkable 3.32 grade-point average. In addition to the numerous hours spent on their studies, Rambler student-athletes also log countless hours of training in their respective sport.
Because they understand the privilege of attending Loyola and being a NCAA Division I student-athlete, current Ramblers are committed to reinvesting in the athletics department. Only a handful of universities have ever accomplished what Loyola has this year - having each student-athlete donate to the athletics department. During the 2012-13 academic year, all 240 Loyola student-athletes contributed to the Rambler Varsity Club.
When current Ramblers make a gift to Loyola Athletics through the Rambler Varsity Club, the senior class determines how the collected funds will be allocated to enhance the overall student-athlete experience. This year, Loyola student-athletes raised $1,500 and the senior class voted to use the funds to purchase equipment to be used in the training room to help aid the recovery process. Through their commitment to the department the student-athletes will see first-hand the importance of giving back.
This is the first year that Loyola student-athletes were approached about the importance of the newly created Rambler Varsity Club, which has the goal of reaching 1,963 donors by the end of the fiscal year on June 30. This is no arbitrary number however, because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ramblers' 1963 NCAA men's basketball championship. The Rambler Varsity Club started the fiscal year with 712 donors and that total has swelled to 1,360 donors, only 603 away from the goal.
"We are incredibly honored to work with these student-athletes and staff members on a daily basis," Loyola Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. M. Grace Calhoun said. "When you can share with a donor or prospective donor that every single person in the athletics department from head coaches, to teams, to interns and even the mascot, is invested in making Loyola the championship model to be followed, it is an extremely powerful message."
