CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago alums, faculty, staff and fans are invited to attend the Alumni Gym Final Farewell on Saturday, May 7 at 6 p.m., at Alumni Gym on the Lake Shore Campus. The historic building, which has been the site of numerous landmark moments in Loyola Athletics history, will be razed in May to make way for a new student union.
For the nominal cost of $10, which includes a $5 donation to the reimagine campaign for student life, attendees will be able to enjoy cocktails and gourmet game food. All are encouraged to wear Maroon and Gold.
Alumni Gym opened in 1924 and was the home of Loyola Athletics for nearly 90 years. The men's basketball team finished its tenure in Alumni Gym with an all-time record of 484-136 and the cozy facility was the site of the 1963 NCAA Championship team's home games.
Loyola's men's and women's volleyball teams have also called Alumni Gym home over the years and the women's team earned five NCAA Tournament berths while benefiting from the tremendous home-court advantage there. The men's volleyball squad has been consistently ranked in the Top 15 over the better part of the last decade and in 2009, the Ramblers knocked off defending national champion and then No. 1 Penn State, in Alumni Gym.
