Oct. 2, 2012
CHICAGO - For the second straight month, Sam Penzenstadler (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) and Anna Eytchison (Columbia, Ill./Columbia/Dayton) have been selected as Loyola University Chicago's Male and Female Athlete of the Month, respectively, for the month of September.
Penzenstadler had an outstanding month and finished first overall at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on September 15, clocking in at 24:24 in the 8K race. The sophomore's efforts helped the Loyola men's cross country team to the team title and he was hailed as the Horizon League Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week on September 17 for that performance. He also was the Ramblers' top finisher at the 40th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational, taking 11th place with a time of 25:02 as the men's team captured fourth place in the 47-team event.
Eytchison, who was tabbed Horizon League Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week yesterday, rolled up 200 kills (4.44 kps), 84 digs (1.87 dps) and 29 blocks (0.64 bps) in 13 matches last month as the Ramblers posted a 7-6 record. The graduate student led Loyola in kills in 10 of 13 matches in September and posted 20 or more stops in six matches, including three of the Ramblers' first four Horizon League contests.
In addition to blasting a career-high 28 kills in Loyola's victory over Wright State in the Horizon League opener for both teams, the 6-foot-3 outside hitter recorded the first three double-doubles of her career, including a 22-kill, 13-dig performance to help the Ramblers get past city rival DePaul on September 15.
For the season, Eytchison has racked up 259 kills, 109 digs, 37 blocks, 13 service aces and a .251 (259-104-618) hitting percentage and provided a spark for a team that is currently tied for the Horizon League lead with a 3-1 ledger.
