Seven Ramblers Earn Fall Academic All-League Honors
Dec. 17, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS - Seven Loyola University Chicago student-athletes earned Academic All-Horizon League honors in their respective sports, the League office announced today (Dec. 17). The seven honorees give Loyola the second-highest total among League schools behind Butler's 11. Junior Ben Reifenberg and sophomore Josh Stein represent Loyola's cross country squad on the Academic All-League team. Reifenberg, an accounting/sport management major, earns Academic All-League for the second time after receiving the honor in 2008. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native put together three top-15 finishes this season, along with finishing in 56th at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. Stein, a biology major, earned two top-15 finishes and finished in 53rd at the Midwest Regional. Will Martin, Loyola's lone men's soccer representative, earns another academic honor after being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team in October. The junior defender's 3.97 GPA in biology is tied for highest among the League's men's soccer honorees. Martin also earned Academic All-League status last season, along with three U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards in 2008. Senior Casey Berrier and sophomore Katie Groesch both represent Loyola on the women's soccer Academic All-League team after being named second team All-League in October. Berrier, a psychology major, earns her first Academic All-League honor. The defender was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team and the NSCAA Academic All-Region Second Team in 2008. Groesch, the Ramblers' starting goalkeeper, also earns her first Academic All-League award. The biology major finished the season with 89 saves, seven shutouts and a 1.51 GAA in 22 matches and was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Oct. 26. Seniors Lauren Ditscheit and Alyse Serritella represent Loyola on the women's volleyball Academic All-League team. The pair of Ramblers adds another academic award after earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team honors in October. Ditscheit earns her second Academic All-League honor after being named to the same team in 2008. The public relations/advertising major finished the season with 735 assists despite missing the first eight matches. Serritella, a psychology major, earns her first Academic All-League honor. The anchor of the Rambler defense for the past three years, Serritella rounded out her career in second place all-time at Loyola in digs after recording 500 this season. The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits. |
