CHICAGO (March 21, 2018) – Loyola University Chicago head men's basketball coach
Porter Moser has been named National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 16 Coach of the Year. In his seventh season as the Ramblers' bench boss, Moser has guided Loyola to numerous records in an historic season.
Â
Moser has piloted his charges to a program-record 30 victories (30-5) as well as a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1985. Hailed as the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year this season, Moser masterfully kept his team afloat despite some early injuries to its starting backcourt, notching a 65-59 victory at then-No. 5 Florida for the Ramblers' first win over a top five club since 1984. Loyola also rolled to a 15-3 record in Missouri Valley play, and captured its first outright regular-season conference title since 1984-85. This season, the Naperville, Illinois native became just the fifth player to win the MVC regular-season title as both a player and as a coach.
Â
Loyola enters the NCAA South Regional semifinals on a 12-game winning streak, the program's longest run since capturing 19 straight contests in 1984-85. This season, Moser developed the MVC Player of the Year (
Clayton Custer), as well as the conference's Freshman of the Year (
Cameron Krutwig) and Defensive Player of the Year (
Ben Richardson).
Â
Earlier this season, Moser became the sixth coach in Loyola history to win 100 games at the school and his 119 victories are the fourth most by a Ramblers' coach in the program's 100-year history, behind only George Ireland (321), Lenny Sachs (223), and Gene Sullivan (149).
Â
Moser has captained Loyola to 48 victories since the start of the 2016-17 campaign, its most in a two-year window since 1962-64 when it produced 51 wins.
Â
Loyola takes on No. 24 Nevada tomorrow night in the NCAA South Regional semifinals in Atlanta.Â
