CHICAGO (June 11, 2018) – Loyola University Chicago head women's basketball coach
Kate Achter announced the signing of Jazmine Covington (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird/Phoenix College) to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. Covington, who arrives in Rogers Park following a two-year stint at Phoenix College, will have two years of eligibility remaining when she joins the Ramblers at the start of the 2018-19 academic year.
"We are so pleased to welcome Jazmine to our Rambler family," Achter commented. "Jazz's basketball ability almost speaks for itself, as she is fresh off a First Team All-America season at Phoenix College. She is crafty with the ball and is fantastic at finding her teammates in the half-court. Above all else, Jazz competes at a very high level and demands that her teammates do the same."
Covington, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., is coming off a sophomore season with the Bears that saw her claim National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II First Team All-America honors. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged a team-high 17.5 points and reached double figures in scoring in 26 of her 31 appearances, highlighted by a career-best 36-point effort in a clash with South Mountain on Jan. 17.
As a freshman at Phoenix College, Covington put up 11.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg, while operating at a 41.1 percent rate from the field and scored a season-high 24 points in a victory over Tohono O'odham.
Prior to joining the Bears, Covington starred at Thunderbird High School, where she averaged 13.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 2.0 spg en route to earning a Division II Honorable Mention All-State selection.
Covington is the fourth member of Loyola's 2018-19 recruiting class, joining the previously announced trio of Allison Day, Maya Dunson and Janae Gonzalez. The Ramblers are slated to return seven letterwinners from last season to go along with the incoming quartet. That group is led by Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team honoree
Abby O'Connor.
