INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Redshirt senior Jake Mazanke turned in a standout performance to lead the charge for the Loyola University Chicago track & field team as the Ramblers opened up the outdoor portion of their 2016-17 schedule today.
Mazanke posted a personal-best time of 1:49.06 to take third overall in the 800m run at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The St. Charles, Ill. native used a final push in the last 200m of the event to surge into the front of the pack en route to turning in the second-fastest time in the event in school history. Mazanke's time should qualify him for the NCAA West Regional in May.
The Ramblers also had a successful day at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., racking up seven event titles. Junior Cassie Bloch (4:39.32) and freshman Connor McCue (3:57.45) swept the 1,500m run crowns, while junior Kiera Washpun (16-07.00; 5.05m) and freshman Eric Burns (22-07.25; 6.89m) matched the feat in the long jump. Burns' leap ranks fourth on the program's all-time outdoor record board in the event.
Freshman Michael Edwards finished first in the men's 400m dash at 49.91, with sophomore Leron Norton (50.08) and senior Jaz Hayes (50.41) coming in second and third, respectively. Sophomore Regan Todhunter checked in at 15.65 to cross the finish line first in the 110m hurdles. In the women's sprints, freshman Denee' Lawrence picked up a victory in the 100m dash as she clocked in at 12.66. Sophomore Natajah Simmons was close behind in third in the event with a time of 12.78.
"We battled though some chilly and blustery conditions but got some good work in today," Loyola head track & field coach Bob Thurnhoffer said. "On the women's side, Denee' (Lawrence) took the win in the 100m dash and Cassie (Bloch) had a very convincing victory in the 1,500m run. The men had a nice day with Eric (Burns), Michael (Edwards), and Connor (McCue) all taking home wins, while Sam (Urben) had a great showing in the 800m run."
The Maroon & Gold was also represented the past two days at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla., with the Rambler throwers taking center stage. Sophomore Kevin Cooney took sixth in the men's hammer throw with a top toss of 155-9 (47.48), while senior Devan Egan earned a sixth-place finish of her own in the women's javelin with a personal-best mark throw of 126-0 (38.42m).
Loyola will be back in action next weekend when it sends squads to the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., March 24-25, and the Bill Cornell Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill. on March 25.
