CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago track & field teams will begin the outdoor portion of their 2017 schedule this weekend by traveling to Indianapolis, Ind. for the Stan Lyons Invitational.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Saturday morning, with track events commencing at 1 p.m. (ET). The Ramblers are part of an 11-team field assembled for the event that also includes host Butler, Ball State, Cardinal Stritch, Eastern Kentucky, Grace College, IUPUI, Marian University, UIC, Wright State and Xavier.
Redshirt junior Alex Baker and sophomore Kevin White will both look to parlay success from the indoor season into the outdoor campaign. White used a dramatic late kick to capture the 800m run crown at the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Baker turned in an inspired performance in the 3,000m run to notch a runner-up finish at the league meet. In the field, freshman Eric Burns looks to ascend the outdoor record boards after a standout indoor season that saw him climb to third all-time at Loyola in the long jump.
On the women's side, juniors Cassie Bloch and Kiera Washpun are coming off impressive indoor seasons that saw them both medal at the MVC Championships in February. Bloch capped off a breakout campaign by taking third overall in the mile run as both she and senior Audrey Michaelson scored for the Maroon & Gold in the event, while Washpun fell less than an inch shy of setting a new indoor school record in the long jump en route to a third-place finish of her own.
A handful of Ramblers are scheduled to be in action further away from home this weekend. Redshirt senior Jake Mazanke will head west to compete at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., while throwers venture to Tampa, Fla. for the Bulls Invitational.
Loyola will split squads next weekend when it sends athletes to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays, March 24-25, and the Bill Cornell Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill. on March 25.
