NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore Sam Penzenstadler and senior Gina Valgoi both earned medalist honors as the Loyola men's and women's cross country teams capped off an impressive showing at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships in Normal, Ill. The men's team captured the team championship, while the women's side finished second behind the University of Illinois.
Led by Penzenstadler, the men's side owned four of the top ten spots in their race. Juniors Jake Autio and Alex Thornburg, along with senior Oscar Aguinaga, all finished in the top ten. Head coach Randy Hasenbank was very impressed with his men's side.
"Sam, Jake and Alex worked hard at becoming better distance runners this summer and it showed today," said Hasenbank. "They were patient and really went to work on the back half of the race. It was very well executed."
The women's side was not to be overlooked either. Along with Valgoi, Loyola placed four finishers in the top sixteen. Juniors Megan Janezic and Alyvia Clark turned in times of 17:52 and 18:00, respectively. Freshman Sydney Stuenkel was also very impressive, competing in only her second college meet, posting a time of 17:57. Coach Hasenbank had nothing but positive things to say about the effort his women's side turned in.
"Our women's side was equally as impressive as the men. We recorded to big wins over some very good teams in our division," stated Hasenbank. "Both Bradley and Illinois State are ranked above us in the Midwest Region so this is a confidence booster."
The Ramblers will return to action on Saturday, September 29th as they host the 40th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Beach in Chicago.
