Urbana, Ill. - Junior Mary Whitmore finished in eleventh place to lead the Loyola University Chicago cross country team at the Illini Open in Urbana, Ill. this afternoon.
The Ramblers brought a young lineup, which performed admirably, to the Illini Open today. Joining Whitmore (19:23) in the top 25 was sophomore Ashley Wile, finishing with a time of 19:58 in the women's 5k race. Sophomores Rachel Bush and Ally Spiroff were close behind, posting times of 20:11 and 20:21, respectively. Rounding out the Loyola lineup was freshman Claire Miller with a time of 21:58.
Bradley claimed the team title on the women's side, while the Ramblers finished in fourth place. Colette Falsey (18:46) from Illinois earned medalist honors.
Freshman Isaac Piepszowski was the lone Loyola representative in the men's 8k race. He finished in twelfth place with a final time of 27:22. Will Brewster (25:48), running unattached, won the men's race. Assistant coach Jackie Kropp was pleased with the effort that she saw.
"I thought we separated and ran well today," stated Kropp. "This will serve as great experience for our athletes and benefit us in the upcoming conference championship meet."
The Loyola University Chicago men's and women's cross country teams will now turn their attention to the 2012 Horizon League Championships, taking place in Kenosha, Wis. on October 27.
