CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Normal, Ill. on Friday for the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships. The event will be hosted by Illinois State University and take place at the Weibring Golf Course. The Ramblers will be looking to build off their impressive start to the season at the Illini Challenge in Champaign, Ill.
"We're really excited. We've had two good weeks of training," said assistant coach Jackie Kropp. "Our athletes are excited to get out there and compete against some excellent teams from both the Horizon League and the rest of the region."
Senior Gina Valgoi will be looking to pick up right where she left off last fall. Valgoi turned in one of the finest seasons in Loyola history, registering as Loyola's top finisher in five of six fall meets in 2011. After not competing in the opening meet of the 2012 season, she is excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.
"We have a great opportunity to win our conference this year," stated Valgoi. "Instead of feeling added pressure, our team is just ready to get out there and show what we can do."
For the men's team, sophomore Sam Penzenstadler will be looking to continue his strong start to the 2012 season. Penzenstadler earned medalist honors in the 6k layout in Champaign. Junior Jake Autio and Alex Thornburg will also look to help pace the Ramblers.
Following the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, Loyola will host the 40th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, September 29th at Montrose Beach in Chicago.
