CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago sophomore Sam Penzenstadler and senior Gina Valgoi swept Horizon League Runners of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. Penzenstadler and Valgoi both earned medalist honors in their respective races at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships last Friday in Normal, Ill.
Penzenstadler, finishing first for the second consecutive event, won his race with a final time of 24:24. Along with Penzenstadler, the Ramblers placed three other runners in the top ten, en route to winning the overall team championship.
Valgoi, competing for the first time in the 2012 fall season, set a new course record with a time of 17:02. Bolstered by Valgoi's first place finish, Loyola also placed three more runners in the top sixteen, finishing second to the University of Illinois in the final team standings.
The Ramblers strong showing in Normal, Ill. is reflected in the most recent USTFCCCA rankings. The men's side makes their debut in the rankings at No. 11 in the Midwest region, while the women's side made the jump from No.15 to No. 9, passing in-state rivals Illinois State and Bradley.
Loyola's men and women will return to action when the Ramblers host the 40th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Beach in Chicago on Saturday, September 29.
