CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago cross country team will travel to Urbana, Ill. this Friday to compete in the Illini Open. The event will be hosted by the University of Illinois and take place at the UI Arboretum.
"We're taking about half of our athletes that will be competing in the upcoming Horizon League Championships down to Urbana this Friday," said assistant coach Jackie Kropp. "It will be a great opportunity for us to compete against in-state competition, including the fifth-ranked Illinois women's squad."
The Ramblers will send a heavily laden freshman and sophomore squad to the Illini Open, with senior Catherine Crisler and junior Mary Whitmore representing the only upperclassmen making the trip. The women's 5k race is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
"As a senior, I feel that it is my responsibility to step up and be a leader," stated Catherine Crisler. "If I exude confidence and bring a positive attitude, hopefully it will influence my teammates and help us towards a great showing."
Freshman Isaac Piepszowski will be the only Loyola representative in the men's 8k race, slated to begin at 4:45 p.m.
Following the Illini Open, the Loyola men's and women's cross country teams will return to action when they compete at the 2012 Horizon League Championships in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday, October 27.
