CHICAGO - Championship season kicks into gear for the Loyola University Chicago men's and women's cross country teams this Saturday with the 2012 Horizon League Championships. The event will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and take place at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis.
The action will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the women's 5k race. The men's 8k race is scheduled to start at noon and will be followed by the awards ceremony at 12:45 p.m.
With perennial power Butler recently departing from the conference, the Ramblers are looking to claim championships on both the men and women's sides. Strong competition, highlighted by city rival UIC and host school Milwaukee, won't make it easy.
"We're going to Kenosha with high expectations," stated Head Coach Randy Hasenbank. "Our goal is to come back home with two titles. I think that this is very attainable. All we need to do is perform to the level that we're capable of."
On the men's side, Junior Jake Autio will be hoping to build off his strong showing at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Louisville, Ky. Autio posted a time of 24:31, the top mark for the Rambler men on the day. Senior Gina Valgoi will be looking to anchor the women's side after she turned in another strong showing in Louisville, finishing with a team-best time of 21:00.
Rambler sophomore Sam Penzenstadler will be making a return to his home state this weekend. Penzenstadler, a native of Oshkosh, Wis., turned in a time of 24:38 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet.
Following the Horizon League Championships, Loyola will be back in action on November 9th when they compete at the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Springfield, Mo.
