CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago guard Milton Doyle (Chicago, Ill./Marshall/Kansas) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week it was announced this afternoon by the league office. In two contests last week, both Rambler wins, the 6-foot-4 senior averaged 24.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals and shot a sizzling 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from three-point range as Loyola improved to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the MVC.
Doyle opened his week on January 4 by nearly recording a triple-double in the Ramblers’ 77-66 victory over Northern Iowa, a team which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The Chicago native accounted for 13 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and a pair of steals to spark Loyola to its eighth victory in nine tries at home this season.
In a performance for the ages, Doyle was unstoppable at both ends of the floor in Loyola’s 78-62 win at Bradley on January 7 as he recorded career highs of 35 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 13 of 17 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 from three-point territory. He is the second Rambler this season to record at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a game and his 35-point output is the best by a Loyola player since J.R. Blount poured in 42 points against Rockhurst on November 14, 2008. The double-double is just the second of Doyle’s career and his first since going for 16 points and 10 boards at Drake on February 25, 2014 during his freshman campaign.
A Preseason Second Team All-MVC pick, Doyle is a bona fide Valley Player of the Year candidate this season. Dating back to last year, he has scored in double figures in 18 consecutive contests, the longest stretch of his career, and now ranks 16th on Loyola’s career scoring chart with 1,383 points. He also sits seventh with 391 career assists.
For the season, Doyle is averaging team highs of 15.5 ppg and 4.4 apg, while ranking second on the club with 4.6 rpg and 1.5 spg. He is connecting on 50.5 percent (95-for-188) of his field goal attempts and 38.7 percent (24-for-62) of his triple tries.
Loyola returns to action Wednesday night (Jan. 11) when it travels to MVC co-leader Wichita State. Tip-off is set for 6p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
