Averkamp Claims Another Horizon League Scholar-Athlete Of The Month Honor

CHICAGO - Ben Averkamp (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) has been named Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of January it was announced today. Averkamp, who has now garnered the honor for three straight months, was recognized along with Tabitha Gerardot, a women's basketball player at Valparaiso, who captured female honors for January. In January, Averkamp, a senior forward on the men's basketball team, contributed 15.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game as Loyola University Chicago recorded four wins. The 6-foot-8 team captain scored in double figures in eight of the Ramblers' nine contests last month and notched a pair of double doubles, including a 22-point, 12-rebound performance in a 76-65 victory over Milwaukee on January 30. Averkamp opened the new year by putting up 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in the Ramblers' 63-54 victory at defending Horizon League regular-season champion Valparaiso on January 2, and also pitched in 18 points and 11 boards in an overtime win at Chicago State on January 20. Heading into tomorrow's game against UIC, Averkamp needs only three blocked shots to become the first player in Loyola's storied history to rack up 1,300 points, 600 rebounds, 150 assists, and 150 blocks. Off the court, the biology major is a two-time Capital One First Team Academic All-District V selection, who has also collected Horizon League Men's Basketball All-Academic Team, National Jesuit Men's Basketball All-Academic Team, I-AAA Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team, and National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court recognition. Averkamp is also a member of Loyola's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is the president of the Horizon League chapter of SAAC. For the season, Averkamp is leading the Ramblers with averages of 15.3 ppg and 6.5 rpg. Loyola is back in action tomorrow when it hosts UIC at 1 p.m. |
