Averkamp Earns Preseason All-Horizon League Recognition
Oct. 2, 2012
CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago senior Ben Averkamp (Germantown, Wis./Germantown), who put together his best season as a Rambler last winter, has been predicted to be a Second Team All-Horizon League performer for the 2012-13 season, according to Lindy's Sports Annuals. Last season, Averkamp led the team with 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and became the Ramblers' first all-conference selection since 2006-07.
In 2011-12, Averkamp blossomed into one of the top post players in the conference and picked up Second Team All-Horizon League honors. The 6-foot-8 forward was one of only two individuals to rank among the top five in the Horizon League in both scoring and rebounding last season and he also chipped in 2.6 assists per game.
Averkamp scored in double figures on 21 occasions last winter, 10 times tossing in 20 or more points.
Heading into the 2012-13 campaign, Averkamp, who also excels in the classroom and was a Capital One First Team Academic All-District V honoree a year ago, needs only 11 points and 27 rebounds to become just the 19th player in Loyola history to accumulate over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career.
According to Lindy's, Averkamp will be joined on the All-Horizon League Second Team by Keifer Sykes (Green Bay), Reggie Arceneaux (Wright State), Anton Grady (Cleveland State) and James Haarsma (Milwaukee). Detroit's Ray McCallum was tabbed as Player of the Year, with Kendrick Perry (Youngstown State), Ryan Broekhoff (Valparaiso), Kevin Van Wijk (Valparaiso), and Alec Brown (Green Bay).
Loyola officially begins practice in preparation for the 2012-13 season next Friday (Oct. 12). The Ramblers open the regular season at home versus Toledo (Nov. 9).
