CHICAGO - Loyola basketball fans can help ring in the start of the 2008-09 season by attending Midnight Madness festivities at the Gentile Center on the Lake Shore Campus on Friday, Oct. 17. Doors open at 10 p.m., for a night of interactive opportunities for fans and scrimmages from both the Loyola men's and women's teams.

The first 2,000 students in attendance will receive a free t-shirt, compliments of the Loyola Athletics Department, along with free pizza and soda. In addition to the brief scrimmages from each Rambler basketball team, a slam dunk and three-point contest will be held and selected students will have an opportunity to shoot for free tuition and for a textbook scholarship.

Fifth-year men's coach Jim Whitesell welcomes back four starters from last year's squad, including leading scorer, senior guard J.R. Blount, who tallied 15.1 points per game in 2007-08. Blount is joined by a strong cast of seniors that also features guard Justin Cerasoli (9.5 ppg in 2007-08) and forwards Leon Young (10.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Darrin Williams (3.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg).

On the women's side, five starters return for head coach Shannon Reidy. The talented cast features junior guards Maggie McCloskey (11.5 ppg), Keisha Collins (11.1 ppg), Jessica Hylton (8.5 ppg), junior forward Elyse VanBogaert (10.7 ppg) and sophomore forward Brittany Boeke (9.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg).

The entire Midnight Madness event will be broadcast live on the Horizon League Network, which can be accessed at www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv.
