Our one and only preseason game before the official start of the season was exactly what this team needed. Ferris State is very good Division II team that will win a lot of games this year and make a run in its league and conference tournament, so this game was an excellent measuring stick for where this team stands on both sides of the court. The 15-point victory felt good to see up on the scoreboard, but we know that it was a game that will prove very useful leading up to our first regular-season game against Toledo Friday night. Ferris State played a very good game, and each and every player on our team benefited by getting the first-game jitters and excitement out of their system. For the returning players, it was good to get back out under the lights and remember how the games felt. For the newcomers and guys who have not played in awhile, it was a great experience for them to get their first taste of action at this level of play.
The buzz I heard after the game, in person and all over social media, like Twitter and Facebook, was that Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls was in attendance for our game. Now, I personally did not see him because I was just a little bit busy on the court and in the game, but my dad confirmed the sighting later when I brought it up. That was definitely something cool to hear that one of the best basketball players in the world was there watch our game and your team. It was great to hear and read about the excitement from our fans!
PREPARATIONS FOR TOLEDO
The scrimmage gave us a measurement of where we were at defensively. The first half we knew that we had a few corrections to make, and Coach told us to stick with our defensive principles and to do our jobs, and we would be okay. At one point in the second half we held Ferris State to just 10 points in 17 minutes of play. It gave a glimpse of what our TEAM defense can do to teams. Was it perfect? No. We know that we are far from our goals defensively, but it was nonetheless a great vision to see what our team can do when we play together. We are going to continue to move forward and keep our arrow moving up as we get ready for Friday night's game against a very good Toledo team. After last year's buzzer-beater by Ben, we know that Toledo is going to come ready to play wanting a win on our home floor as payback for last year's game. This week we are continuing to focus on defense. Our coaches do an amazing job scouting, and their detail in every aspect of our game plan is what will give us the edge going into the game.
I know that I will see you all there to fill up Gentile Arena Friday night for the home opener!
