CHICAGO - Former Loyola University Chicago men's basketball standouts Hunter Atkins (Highland, Ind./Highland) and Eric Dolezal (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) are two of the 18 individuals who were named to the 2013 Silver Anniversary Team by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame today. Atkins and Dolezal, who were both members of Loyola's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, were selected for their outstanding accomplishments in high school 25 years ago.
Other notable names on this year's Silver Anniversary Team include Woody Austin (Purdue), Shawn Kemp (Trinity Valley CC), Matt Nover (Indiana), and Sean Woods (Kentucky) among others.
After beginning his career at the University of Mississippi, Atkins transferred to Loyola, where he averaged 10.3 ppg and 2.2 rpg in 54 appearances from 1990-92. In his first year in Rogers Park, the 6-foot-3 guard ranked second on the team with 13.7 ppg in 1990-91, and on January 24, 1991, he torched Saint Louis for a career-best 30 points. He shares the Loyola record for three-pointers in a game with eight.
At Highland High School, Atkins set a school record with 1,494 career points and gathered 537 rebounds and 273 assists. A four-year starter and three-year team most valuable player, he set a Highland High School single-game scoring record with 50 points versus Lake Central in 1987. As a senior at Highland, he put up 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists per game and was named Lake Suburban Conference Player of the Year.
Dolezal played at Loyola from 1990-93 after playing one year at the University of Nebraska and currently ranks 33rd on the Ramblers' all-time scoring chart with 1,046 points (12.3 ppg). Consistency marked the 6-foot-3 guard's career as he averaged between 11.9 and 12.6 ppg during his Loyola career, with his best season coming as a senior in 1992-93 when he contributed 12.6 ppg and 4.7 rpg.
A standout at LaPorte High School, Dolezal was a 1988 Indiana All-Star and totaled 1,261 points and 573 rebounds in his prep career. During his senior campaign, Dolezal averaged 24.3 ppg and 9.1 rpg and was tabbed all-regional, all-state and News Dispatch and Herald Argus Player of the Year.
