Peoria, Ill. - Junior Alex Cusumano (76-76-70) finished tied for third on the individual leaderboard as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team completed play at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Collegiate Classic in Peoria, Ill.
The Ramblers finished ten strokes behind Valparaiso, who claimed the team championship. Loyola Head Coach Adam Kwiatkoski hoped for a better finish for his team but drew positives out of how they performed this weekend.
"I'm disappointed in the place that we finished," said Kwiatkoski. "Alex played great and all of the guys hit the balls well. We struggled with the conditions of some of the greens. We're looking forward to competing at Northwestern next week."
Cusumano was fantastic on the final day of play this afternoon. His final round, two-under par 70 sets a new season-low for the St. Louis, Mo. native. Cusumano finished just one stroke out of qualifying for a playoff to determine the individual champion. Bradley's Andrew Weisenborn claimed medalist honors with a birdie on the second hole of the playoff.
For the second day in a row, sophomore Nick Dennis (74-78-75) and freshman PJ Riner (78-77-74) both followed Cusumano for Loyola on the leaderboard. Dennis (12th) carded a three-over par 75 in the final round, while Riner (T-13th) posted a two-over par 72.
Senior Brian Van De Motter (79-76-77) and junior Nick Willenborg (84-73-76) closed out play in Peoria with scores of 77 and 76, respectively. Sophomore Anthony Maroon (85-87-78) rounded out the Loyola lineup this afternoon.
The Loyola University Chicago men's golf team will return to action in the Chicagoland area at the Kemper Sports Intercollegiate, hosted by Northwestern University, in Glenview, Ill., April 15-16.
