Play Suspended Due To Darkness At Windon Memorial Classic

Oct. 16, 2011

SKOKIE, Ill. - Playing in one of the top tournaments in the Midwest, featuring some of the top teams both in the region and the nation, the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team turned in a solid performance in round one of the Windon Memorial Classic today before round two was suspended due to darkness. The Ramblers posted a team score of 289 to tie with Idaho for ninth place and that score puts them a mere six strokes out of third. No. 8 Arkansas and host Northwestern share the team lead with a 274 after 18 holes.

Loyola senior Erik Hoops shot a one-under-par 69 in Sunday's opening round at Evanston Golf Club to lead the team. Hoops, as well as fellow teammate Nick Dennis shot even-par on 13 of the 18 holes in round one. Hoops' opening round score was one shot better than No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, UCLA's Patrick Cantlay, who tallied a 70.

Dennis also turned in an impressive round, shooting a two-over 72, while Alex Cusumano tallied a three-over 73, Sean Hickey added a 75 and Charlie Schaffer carded a 76.

Playing in the Windon Classic for the first time ever, Loyola more than held its own against some stiff competition and finds itself within reach of Indiana, UCLA, Charlotte, Purdue and Michigan, and ahead of Marquette, Pepperdine, Florida Atlantic and Penn State, among others.

Eric Chun of Northwestern sits atop the leaderboard after one round of play thanks to a dazzling five-under-par 65 earlier today.

Round two will be continued tomorrow morning, with the originally scheduled final round of the 54-hole tournament to immediately follow.
