Loyola Falls Short to Santa Clara, 1-0
Sept. 6, 2010
IRVINE, Calif.- The Loyola men's soccer team fell in another heartbreaker this weekend, this time to Santa Clara on Monday afternoon. The Broncos scored in the 69th minute, and never looked back, winning 1-0 over the Ramblers in Irvine, Calif. Loyola falls to 0-3-0 with the loss. With the win, Santa Clara moves to 1-1-0. "This was a game of lost opportunities," said Loyola men's soccer head coach Brendan Eitz. "It was a lack of finishing. We didn't play well enough at the end to win today. It was another tough game against a top-25 team." The Rambler defense did all it could to prevent the aggressive Bronco offense from finding the scoreboard. Loyola's backline gave up just nine total shots on the day, while Rambler goalkeeper Peter McKeown made two saves. However, the shot that won the game for Santa Clara came with a fortunate bounce. In the 69th minute, Bronco Harrison Hanley scored after receiving the ball off the Rambler post from teammate Brandon Zimmerman's attempt. Hanley's cleanup work put Santa Clara ahead 1-0. Loyola made one last effort to even up the contest, when Eric Nock fired a shot in the 85th minute, but Bronco goalkeeper Kevin Klasila made the save. The Ramblers fired seven shots in the game, earning nine fouls along the way. Senior Willie Koss led Loyola with three shots. Following the contest, Koss and Will Martin were named to the UC Irvine College Classic All-Tournament Team, due to their fine play this weekend. The men's soccer team will travel home and prepare for its next match on September 11, when the UMKC Kangaroos visit Loyola Soccer Park. Match time is set for 7 p.m. CST. |
