South Carolina Sinks Loyola In Overtime, 2-1

Sept. 18, 2005

Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina's Ayo Akinsete scored in the 107th minute to send Loyola (1-3-1) to a 2-1 (OT) loss in the finale of the adidas/Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C.

Similar to Friday's match, in which Tony DeLuca scored within minutes of entering the match as a substitute, the Ramblers received a boost from their bench. This time, sophomore Reed Cataldo, making his Loyola debut, provided the lift, scoring in the 43rd minute to give LU a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

South Carolina pushed forward in the second half but staunch Loyola defending helped the visitors maintain its one-goal lead. The Ramblers managed to hold out until the 84th minute, when Eric Szeszycki put one past Brad Sommer to even the match. After being reduced to 10 men in the final two minutes of regulation, Loyola battled deep into the second overtime when Akinsete buried one to give USC the win.

South Carolina enjoyed a 32-10 edge in shots for the match but Sommer was up to the task, recording 11 saves between the sticks.

Loyola returns to action on Friday afternoon, opening Horizon League play at Illinois-Chicago at 4:30 p.m.
