CHICAGO -The tenth-ranked Ramblers fell to No. 7 Long Beach State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-15), in their season opener on Friday afternoon. Despite taking a 16-14 lead in the first set, Loyola was unable to keep control of the match as the 49ers attack proved too much.
Junior Joseph Smalzer (Palos Heights, Ill.) led the Ramblers attack with 14 kills while junior Danny Podkowa (Glenview, Ill.) and sophomore Ryan Baine (Landera Ranch, Calif.) each recorded six kills. Freshmen Diego Rodriguez (Oak Park, Ill.) and Thomas Jaeschke (Wheaton, Ill.) made their first collegiate starts with Jaeschke recording three block assists and Loyola's only service ace of the match.
Loyola continues play in Santa Barbara, Calif., taking on No. 15 Cal Baptist tonight at 9:30 p.m. CST.
