How It Happened
Loyola broke a 10-all tie in set one by scoring four unanswered points, the first coming on a Tischler kill that gave the Ramblers the lead for good, and the final tally of the spurt coming on a Paul Narup service ace. Lindenwood would cut the deficit in half, but back-to-back Rambler points pushed the lead back to four and Loyola would never be threatened the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 victory.
Consecutive Lions errors helped Loyola wipe out a one-point deficit and take a 4-3 lead early in the second set. The Ramblers’ lead would balloon to 12-7 before Lindenwood accounted for five of the next six points to trim the Loyola advantage to 13-12. But, Tischler bookended a 6-0 run with a kill and a block as Loyola extended its lead to 19-12 and coasted to a 25-15 win. Offensively, the Ramblers were virtually unstoppable, hitting .480 (12-0-25) in set two.
The teams battled through a back-and-forth third set and a Jeff Jendryk block put Loyola on top, although for just a brief period time, 17-16. Lindenwood, however, reeled off the next three points to gain a 19-17 advantage and control of the set and Sam Schindler’s kill closed out the Lions’ 25-22 victory.
Back-to-back blocks early in the fourth set stretched Loyola’s lead to 9-4 and the Ramblers appeared in complete control when Ben Plaisted’s kill gave the hosts a 17-12 advantage. Lindenwood refused to go down without a fight though and stormed back to even the score at 17 thanks to five straight points. With the score knotted up at 22, Jendryk, a two-time All-American, delivered a huge kill that gave Loyola the lead for good and Narup and Mahan followed with a block for a two-point Rambler edge. The Lions sliced the deficit in half on a Schindler block, but followed that up with an error on match point to give the Ramblers a 25-22 win.
