QUINCY, Ill. -
Cole Murray ripped a career-high 12 kills and Ben Plaisted added 10 to help Loyola University Chicago to a 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15 victory over Quincy (3-13, 1-9 MIVA) tonight at Pepsi Arena. The win improves the Ramblers' record to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
How It Happened
The Ramblers used a 5-1 run midway through the first set to turn a one-point lead into a 20-15 advantage. That spurt was punctuated by a kill from Murray and a Paul Narup/Murray block. Quincy got within 23-20, but kills from Jeff Jendryk and Ben Plaisted, sandwiched around a Rambler service error, gave Loyola a 25-21 victory.
A 10-4 Loyola run in set two allowed the Ramblers to break a 5-5 tie and grab hold of a 15-9 lead as Narup recorded a pair of kills and a block during that stretch. The Hawks would get no closer than five points the rest of the way as the Ramblers rolled to a 25-16 win.
Quincy staged a remarkable comeback to earn a 25-21 victory in set three. A kill from Murray extended Loyola's lead to 21-18, but the Hawks responded by scoring the final seven points of the set as Anthony Winter tallied two kills and paired with Jarrod Kelso on a block for the final three tallies.
Loyola used two early blocks to help it jump out to a 6-2 advantage in the fourth set, but Quincy rallied to get within a point, at 7-6. However, four Hawks errors aided a 5-1 Loyola run that saw it open up a 12-7 lead and Quincy wouldn't be able to get closer than three points the remainder of the set.
