Loyola University Chicago had one of its worst hitting matches of the season and dropped an 18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 12-25 decision at Lindenwood (2-14, 2-9 MIVA) this afternoon at Hyland Arena. The loss moves the ninth-ranked Ramblers, who hit just .118, to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action.
How It Happened
The Lions used a 6-0 run to gain control of the first set, turning a tie into a 14-8 advantage as five Loyola hitting errors aided that spurt. Loyola would close within 17-14 on a Lindenwood service error, but the Lions bounced back by tallying three consecutive points to regain momentum as they rolled to a 25-18 victory.
Loyola got off to a fast start in set two and led by as many as four points, the latest coming at 11-7, on a Will Tischler kill. Lindenwood fought back and drew even at 19 as Sam Schindler and Adam Brewster teamed up on a block, but a kill from Ben Plaisted and a Lions service error put the Ramblers back on top, 21-19. But, Lindenwood would score six of the final eight points of the set, including the last two tallies, to grab a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 decision.
An inspired Rambler squad came out of the starting blocks fast in the third set, racing out to a 7-1 lead. Lindenwood would slowly chip away at Loyola’s advantage and got within a point on five occasions, the last time coming on Connor Hipelius’ kill that made it 21-20. Loyola would record three of the next four points for some breathing room, and Plaisted finished off the Ramblers’ 25-22 victory with a kill.
Loyola dug itself too large of a hole to climb out of in the fourth set, falling behind 11-5 thanks to six unanswered Lions points, three of which came on consecutive kills from Blake Koppel. The Ramblers hit just -.143 (5-9-28) in the fourth set as Lindenwood cruised to a 25-12 victory and its first-ever win over Loyola in 18 tries.
