Smalzer Named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week
Led Loyola with 37 kills and seven service aces

CHICAGO - Redshirt junior Joseph Smalzer (Palos Heights, Ill.) was named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week after leading Loyola University Chicago with 4.11 kills per set and helping his team to three straight wins, it was announced on Monday. This is the first honor for Smalzer this season, and the third of his career.
Smalzer paced the Ramblers in their win against Carthage on Jan. 16, leading all attackers with 14 kills and collecting three service aces. With Saint Francis next on the slate, Smalzer continued his outstanding play, leading Loyola with 10 kills while garnering a season-high .471 hitting percentage in the Ramblers 3-0 win over the Red Flash.
In the final match of the week, Smalzer moved to fourth all-time in program history after recording three consecutive service aces, to total 105 on his career. He led all players with 18 points against George Mason, while putting away 13 kills and four block assists.
Loyola closes out a trip to the East Coast on Tuesday, Jan. 22, taking on No. 6 Penn State in Rec Hall. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CST.
