After a nearly two-week break from competition, No. 10 Loyola returns to action this weekend when it opens Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) action by hosting Lindenwood and Quincy. The Ramblers are 3-2 at Gentile Arena this season but both of their losses there have come at the hands of nationally ranked foes. Since the start of the 2014 season, Loyola is 40-6 (.870) in regular-season MIVA matches and 20-2 (.909) at home in regular-season conference play.
Scouting the Lions
The Lions are winless this season and have already played four MIVA matches, dropping road games to Grand Canyon (twice), McKendree and Quincy. Lindenwood fell to Quincy in four sets on January 28 in its most recent outing. Four of the Lions’ seven losses have gone to five sets.
Senior outside hitter Jake Duckworth paces the Lions with 86 total kills and 2.87 kills per set, while freshman middle blocker has gotten his collegiate career off to a solid start by posting a team-high .404 hitting percentage (80-21-146) and adding 1.35 blocks per set (42 total). As a team, Lindenwood hits .224 (344-164-802).
Scouting the Hawks
Quincy has won its last three matches after dropping its first four outings of 2017. The Hawks are coming off a 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Lindenwood on January 28. Quincy is playing its first true road matches of the season this weekend and earlier this year dropped contests versus ranked foes CSUN, Stanford and Long Beach State.
Sophomore outsider hitter David Siebum leads the Hawks with 64 total kills and 2.67 kills per set, while his 29 total digs and eight service aces are also tied for the team lead. Shane McAdams, a junior middle blocker, is hitting a team-best .355 (36-14-62).
As a team, Quincy is hitting .168 (247-147-595).
Loyola plays its first MIVA road matches next weekend when it travels to McKendree (Feb. 9) and Ohio State (Feb. 11).
