Ramblers Open Conference Play This Weekend

CHICAGO - The Ramblers begin conference play this weekend, hosting Quincy on Friday, Feb. 8 before playing Lindenwood on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Gentile Arena. The matches open a five-game homestand for Loyola with the Ramblers playing at home until March 1. First serve for both matches this weekend is at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Ramblers return home after winning the 2013 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic on Feb. 2. Loyola defeated Harvard 3-1, later sweeping Springfield College in the championship match. Peter Jasaitis, Diego Rodriguez and Joseph Smalzer were named to the All-Tournament Team with Smalzer earning Most Outstanding Player. Jasaitis also won the tournament's serving contest while Ryan Baine placed first in the spike contest.
vs. Quincy: The Hawks opened conference play last week falling to Ball State (3-1) and IPFW (3-0). The freshman duo of Jack Gamache (3.39 kills/set) and Ian Lawson (2.79 kills/set) lead Quincy's attack with senior Chris Lynch providing support at setter (9.71 assists/set). The Hawks have struggled at the net, posting 1.4 blocks per set with their best defensive game against King on Jan. 12 when they had 11.5 team blocks. Loyola leads its series with the Hawks, 33-4, sweeping Quincy twice last year. The Ramblers have lost to the Hawks only once at home, falling 3-1 to the MIVA rival in 2000.
vs. Lindenwood: In its first season as a MIVA team, Lindenwood starts 1-3 in conference play with its only win coming on Feb. 1 against IPFW, 3-1. Sophomore Colin Hackworth leads the Lions with 3.30 kills per set and is joined by junior setter Tim Schmidt who averages 9.75 assists per set. Junior Scott Siricki anchors Lindenwood at middle blocker, averaging 1.06 blocks per set while also leading the MIVA with a .459 hitting percentage (1.83 kills/set). Loyola has never lost to Lindenwood, earning an 8-0 overall record in its series with the Lions. The Ramblers swept Lindenwood in Gentile Arena last season, 3-0.
