CHICAGO – The Ramblers continue a five-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 20 when they host conference opponent IPFW at 7 p.m. in Gentile Arena. After falling to Lewis on Saturday night, Loyola looks to rebound and improve its 9-6 overall record.
LAST TIME OUT: Loyola fell to No. 12 Lewis on Feb. 16 and is now third in the MIVA standings with a 2-1 conference record. Joseph Smalzer, Trevor Novotny and Thomas Jaeschke each recorded double-digit kills with Smalzer pacing the Ramblers at 16 kills.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS: The Mastodons are 5-4 overall, losing their last match on Feb. 15 against Ohio State, 3-1. Outside hitter Eddie Rivera paces the attack with 3.23 kills per set and is joined by fellow outside hitter Andy Sellan with 2.90 kills per set. Middle blockers Bryan Saunders and Ramen Burgos have each tallied 27 total blocks as Saunders leads IPFW with 1.04 blocks per set.
Loyola leads its series with IPFW, 21-19, defeating the Mastodons in the MIVA quarterfinals last season, 3-1. After dropping the first set, Loyola came back to win three straight, advancing to the semifinals and improving its record when hosting the Mastodons to 11-7.
FLYING ACES: Loyola has already collected 73 services aces this season and leads the MIVA with 1.46 aces per set. Smalzer is currently ranked third in the nation with .56 service aces per set and paces the Ramblers with 28 aces as Thomas Jaeschke and Jeff Patton follow with 11 aces apiece.
FEELS LIKE HOME: The Ramblers have been successful at home, collecting a 221-49 all-time record when hosting. Loyola is 5-2 at Gentile Arena this season, recently falling to Lewis on Feb. 16. The team closes a five-game homestand this weekend when it hosts Ball State on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m.
