Fifth-seed Loyola opens up MIVA Tournament play Saturday when it visits No. 4 seed Ball State for a quarterfinal match. The winner of Saturday’s contest will play in the semifinal round on Wednesday, April 19. This marks the first time Loyola is playing a first round MIVA Tournament match on the road since 2000 when it opened postseason play at Lewis.
Scouting the Cardinals
Lewis has won five of its last six outings and last weekend earned a pair of four-set victories over Ball State and Fort Wayne. The Flyers are 4-2 on the road this year, with losses to MIVA rivals Grand Canyon and Ohio State.
Redshirt sophomore Mitch Perinar leads Lewis with 3.55 kills per set and is hitting .327, while redshirt senior Jacob Schmiegelt is hitting .424 with a team-best 1.08 blocks per set.
Loyola and Lewis are meeting for the 54th time and the Ramblers hold a 33-20 edge in the series and have won 16 of the last 21 matchups, including the 2015 NCAA Championship.
Loyola is 30-18 all-time in MIVA Tournament action and has won 10 of its last 11 MIVA Tournament matches, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Lewis in last year’s semifinal round. Loyola captured three straight MIVA Tournament crowns, from 2013-15. The Ramblers have also won their last two road MIVA Tournament matches.
The Ramblers and Ball State are meeting for the eighth time in MIVA Tournament play and the Cardinals hold a slim 4-3 edge in those previous seven encounters. This is the first postseason meeting between Loyola and Ball State since April 24, 2013, when the Ramblers picked up a 25-16, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21 victory at Gentile Arena in Chicago.
