CHICAGO - After a successful outing against IPFW in the quarterfinals this past weekend, Dainis Berzins and Peter Jasaitis have been named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today by the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. This is the second weekly honor for Berzins this season and the third for Jasaitas, as No. 13 Loyola sweeps the awards for the second time this season.
Berzins (Brinklow, Md./Sherwood) was named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week after continuing his recent hot streak and blasting 17 kills help lead the No. 3 seeded Ramblers to victory over the No. 6 seeded Mastodons. Berzins finished the match with a team-high .303 hitting percentage (17-7-33) and 4.63 points per set, both well above his regular season averages. The outside hitter also added to the defensive effort, collecting two blocks (one solo, one assist) and eight digs, while also playing for a perfect reception percentage (22-for-22).
Turning in another great performance in the match against IPFW, Jasaitis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) picked up his third Defensive Player of the Week award as Loyola's libero. He gathered 14 digs to lead the Ramblers on defense for the 18th time this season, helping limit IPFW to a .128 hitting percentage on the night. In addition, he turned in a .957 reception percentage (22-for-23), while handing out three assists. Jasaitis enters the MIVA Tournament semifinal ranked first in the conference with a 2.76 digs-per-set average.
No. 3 seed Loyola travels to Romeoville, Ill. this Wednesday, April 25 for the MIVA semifinal match against No. 2 seed Lewis. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. CST. The winner will advance to the championship game on Saturday, April 28.
