CHICAGO – Men’s volleyball newcomer Nicholas Olson returned from Colorado Spring, Colo. this week after winning the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship on Saturday, Sept. 1. Olson, a freshman at Loyola University Chicago, helped the United States team to a 3-1 victory against Canada, contributing 15 points to the win.
“I went out there and tried to play my best,” said Olson. “I wanted to prove I was able to play well with top athletes who are the best in their class and in their country.”
The North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) organizes the Men’s Junior Continental Championship biannually, hosting teams from around the region. Olson was ranked among the top 20 best scorers of the tournament, taking fifth in the Best Blockers category and leading the United States with .63 blocks per set.
A native of New Berlin, Wis., Olson enters his first season on the Loyola men’s volleyball team. Head coach Shane Davis looks forward to Olson’s addition, acknowledging the experience and skills the freshman will bring to the team.
“Nick will bring a lot of experience from high-level competition after competing with the Junior National team,” said Coach Davis. “We’re really excited to add the size and versatility of a great middle like Nick.”
