Jasaitis and Smalzer earn preseason recognition

CHICAGO - Two Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball players earned preseason recognition as Joseph Smalzer and Peter Jasaitis were named 2013 Off the Block Preseason All-Americans, it was announced today. Smalzer was named a Preseason First-Team All-American while Jasaitis earned Preseason Second-Team All-American.

Off the Block recognizes Division I-II men's volleyball players who are projected to be the best in the nation during the upcoming season. Men's volleyball head coaches and volleyball reporters nationwide selected 10 players to the First-Team All-American list and 10 players to Second-Team All-American.

Smalzer earned preseason accolades after leading the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) and ranking sixth in the nation with a 0.49 aces per game average last season. The junior was also named a 2012 AVCA Second Team All-American, posting a team-high 337 total kills.

Jasaitis was awarded preseason recognition after leading the MIVA and ranking second in the nation last season with a 2.73 digs per game average. The redshirt junior had his best season yet, becoming a 2012 First-Team All-MIVA honoree while moving up in Loyola's record books, collecting 316 digs to take fourth on the program's all-time career digs list.

Loyola is one of six schools to earn two Preseason All-American selections while USC led all teams with three players named to the lists.

The Ramblers open their season on Jan. 4, as the team travels to Santa Barbara, Calif., for the University of California-Santa Barbara Elephant Bar Tournament. Loyola returns to the Gentile Arena the following week, hosting its home opener on Jan. 12 against St. Ambrose.
