Men's Volleyball Picked to Finish Second in MIVA
Dec. 18, 2012 CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball was picked to finish second in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), it was announced today. A preseason poll taken by league coaches has the Ramblers finishing second after receiving 54 points, including one first place vote. "We have six out of seven starters returning from last year," said head coach Shane Davis. "All of these players have gained a lot of experience and we're really looking forward to see what they and the rest of the team bring to the upcoming season." Lewis was selected as the preseason favorite with the Ramblers and the Flyers both having three players earn Preseason All-Conference recognition. Juniors Joseph Smalzer (Palos Heights, Ill.), Dainis Berzins (Brinklow, Md.) and Peter Jasaitis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) all earned a spot on the MIVA Preseason All-Conference Team, with Jasaitis named Preseason Libero of the Year. After finishing third in the MIVA (8-4) in 2012, the Ramblers return six starters and debut seven newcomers. Loyola opens the 2013 campaign with a trip to Santa Barbara, Calif. where the Ramblers will play in the ASICS Invitational on Jan. 4-5.
