Katie Salmon and Brandi Segars finished with 14 points apiece this afternoon as the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team dropped its regular-season finale, 71-46, to visiting Southern Illinois at Gentile Arena. The Salukis (16-13 overall) finish MVC play at 10-8 with the win, while the Ramblers (2-27 overall) wrap up their league slate at 1-17.
How It Happened
Rishonda Napier connected on her first three of the day just over four minutes into the first quarter to help send the Salukis out to a 9-2 lead. Salmon answered back with a post score at the 2:05 mark to make it 13-6. Back-to-back buckets by Segars inside the final 90 seconds of the frame saw the Ramblers chip the Southern Illinois lead to 16-10.
Segars stayed hot early on in the second quarter as she offset a Kim Nebo bucket with a make of her own to cut the margin to 18-12. Kylie Giebelhausen knocked down a three shortly after that sparked an 11-2 Saluki spurt as Loyola's deficit grew to 29-14 with 4:37 remaining in the half. Two Salmon free throws trimmed the lead to 31-18 but the visitors finished with a flurry as they took a 40-20 advantage into halftime.
Salmon converted in the paint early on in the third quarter to pull Loyola to within 40-22. Segars rattled home a jumper at the 4:39 mark to cut the margin to 49-32 as the Ramblers looked to battle back. As was the case at the end of the second quarter, Southern Illinois ended strong, ripping off eight unanswered points to take a 57-32 lead after three quarters of play.
Tiara Wallace connected from beyond the three-point arc with 7:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to get the Ramblers to within 57-37. A split at the free throw line by Lee Williams made it 61-42 four minutes later but that would prove to be as close as Loyola could get before time expired.
