Offensive Drought Proves Costly As Loyola Stumbles At Detroit, 75-62
March 10, 2010
DETROIT - Sixth-seeded Loyola was primed for the upset but third-seeded Detroit used a 23-2 run midway through the second half to turn the game around as the Ramblers' season came to an end with a 75-62 loss to the Titans in a Horizon League Quarterfinal game tonight at Calihan Hall. The Ramblers finish the season at 15-15, their first .500 season since 2001-02, while the Titans improve to 17-13. Loyola got off to a sluggish start, offensively, falling behind 6-0 after three minutes. Katie Kortekamp buried a three-pointer to get the Ramblers on the board and the Ramblers rattled off 11 of the next 12 points to take an 11-7 lead nine minutes into the game. Freshman Abby Skube scored five quick points as the teams traded baskets and LU extended to a five-point edge after two Keisha Collins free throws. A steal and lay-up by Kortekamp in the final minute of the half bumped the Rambler lead to six but they had to settle for a 33-30 lead at halftime after Demeisha Fambro knocked down a long three-pointer in the dying seconds. Collins had nine points and five assists and Kortekamp added seven points and three steals to lead the Ramblers in the half. Kortekamp drove the baseline for a lay-up to open the second half scoring and Maggie McCloskey followed with a three-ball to open up a 38-30 LU lead. Both teams went cold from the floor but the lead was bumped back to eight (41-33) when Kortekamp nailed a trey from the corner. However, Loyola's offense continued to stagnate while Detroit got hot. Tayler Langham got one to go to give UDM the lead (43-41) and Langham and Lauren Allen hit long three-pointers at the end of the shot clock to give the Titans a 59-46 lead with 5:15 to go. Elyse VanBogaert converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound to stem the tide and McCloskey buried back-to-back threes to get the Ramblers within five (60-55) at the 3:00 mark. Loyola's defense could not get the stops it needed, as Jalesa Jones drove for a bucket and knocked down two free throws to bump the lead back to nine and LU would get no closer the rest of the way. As has been the theme for most of the season, McCloskey and Collins led the way for the Ramblers. McCloskey knocked down five three-pointers - running her career total to 325, 11th on the NCAA's all-time list - en route to a team-high 15 points while Collins pitched in with 14 points, eight assists and no turnovers in 40 minutes, surpassing McCloskey for seventh on the career assists list. Kortekamp tied her season high with 12 points while Skube continued her solid late-season play with 10 points off the bench. Loyola bids goodbye to a five-person senior class that accounted for over 3,500 total points, including two 1,000-point scorers, one 500-rebound performer and two of the school's top eight all-time in assists. |
