CHICAGO (February 28, 2005) – Senior guard Meskhenet Lands (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team today as the conference office announced its postseason awards. Regular season champion UW-Green Bay took home Player of the Year (Tiffany Mor) and Coach of the Year (Kevin Borseth) hardware while Wright State’s Whitney Lewis was named Newcomer of the Year in the voting conducted amongst head coaches, sports information directors and selected media.
Lands reached double figures in 21 of Loyola’s 27 regular season games and was among the Horizon League leaders in scoring (3rd, 13.7 ppg) and assists (7th, 2.85 apg). She became the 16th member of Loyola’s 1,000-point club, and second this season, in the home win over Youngstown State on Feb. 5 and enters the postseason just four assists and two steals shy of becoming just the third player in Loyola history to score 1,000 points while finishing in the career-top 10 in assists and steals.
Joining Mor on the first team were teammate Abby Scharlow as well as Jen Perugini (Youngstown State), Nichole Drummond (UW-Milwaukee) and Brittney Whiteside (Wright State). Lands was joined by Dejeanette Flournoy and LaShonda Grant from Illinois-Chicago and Nicole Soulis (UW-Green Bay) and Molly O’Brien (UW-Milwaukee).
Loyola opens Horizon League Championship play tomorrow (Mar. 1) as the eight seed and will host ninth-seeded Cleveland State in a first round game at 4:45 pm at the Gentile Center.
