Loyola Earns First Win Of Season, Defeats Northern Illinois 1-0
Sept. 5, 2010 CHICAGO- Led by sophomore Kristin Papierski's second goal of the season midway through the first-half, the Loyola women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2010 season on Sunday afternoon, beating the Northern Illinois Huskies, 1-0 at the Loyola Soccer Park. The win improves Loyola to 1-5-1 this season, while Northern Illinois falls to 2-2. For the second consecutive game, Jessie Hubly took the opening shot within the first minute of play. Although the attempt missed wide, it was evident the Ramblers came out with a sense of urgency. Twenty minutes later, Papierski, who has scored both of Loyola's goals this season, gave the Ramblers a 1-0 lead at the 22nd minute mark after firing a shot over the head of Huskie goalkeeper Amy Carr. The Rambler sophomore found the ball just inside the Northern Illinois box after receiving a double-pass from Amelia Ambrose and Tessa Daniels. In the second-half, the visiting Huskies nearly tied up the contest after taking two late shots. However, Katie Groesch made two saves, and the Rambler defense held its territory, providing Loyola a 1-0 win and its first-shutout since October 25, 2009. The Ramblers outshot the Huskies 13-6. Northern Illinois fired two shots on goal, while Loyola attempted one, the successful goal. Each team picked up a yellow card and the referees tweeted a combined 20 fouls. Papierski ended the contest with a goal and a shot on goal. Jessie Hubly led Loyola with four shots. Cara Morawski and Tricia Stonebraker each fired two shots. The Loyola women's soccer team will look for win number two this season, when they host the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday, September 10. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST. |
