CHICAGO - Sophomore goalkeeper Monica Gonyo was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Gonyo earned the award after holding South Dakota to a tie game on Friday night and later posting her second shutout of the season against Bowling Green on Sunday.
The Horizon League weekly honor is the first of Gonyo's career, coming after the sophomore made nine saves last week, playing 200 minutes in goal and helping Loyola to a 1-1 double overtime tie against South Dakota and a 1-0 win against Bowling Green. This is the second time a Loyola women's soccer player has been recognized with player of the week honors this season after Ana Claudia Michelini won Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10.
"Monica was fantastic on Sunday against Bowling Green," said head coach Barry Bimbi. "We were missing six regulars and we needed her to be strong and dominant. She showed up and played and the Horizon League recognized her for it. It's a great accomplishment for her and for the program."
Loyola continues play this Friday, Sept. 21, hosting Cleveland State at 7 p.m. before travelling to Indiana State on Sunday, Sept. 23.
