Loyola Falls To SIUE, 2-0
Rogers allows only four hits in tough-luck loss
March 8, 2013
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ashley Rogers tossed a complete-game four hitter but Loyola University Chicago (6-6) was unable to generate much offense in a 2-0 loss to SIU Edwardsville (8-6) this morning at the USF Under Armour Showcase.
SIUE starting pitcher Haley Chambers retired the first seven Ramblers before Hannah Jenkins singled through the right side of the infield, but Loyola was unable to capitalize.
In the fourth, the Ramblers had a golden opportunity to get on the board when Jessica Balzano reached on an error to lead off the inning and Lauren Moore followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Loyola was unable to take advantage however, as a strikeout and a double play groundout ended the scoring threat.
The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when SIUE pushed across a pair of runs, all after two outs. Taylor Tooley reached on an infield single and promptly stole second base before Chelsea Yankolovich laced a single to left to score Tooley. The Cougars added an insurance run one batter later on Rebecca Gray's RBI single.
Loyola managed only two hits off Chambers - Jenkins' third-inning single and Moore's fourth-inning knock. Senior outfielder Brooke Andresen remains one hit away from tying Ellen Antonacci's career record of 177 hits.
Loyola faces Villanova today at 12:15 p.m. Eastern.
