Feb. 27, 2013
Our first weekend of game action was not necessarily what we expected. When we got off of the airplane in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the weather was perfect for softball: 65 and sunny. However, that all changed in a matter of a day. First, we grabbed some lunch at Chick-fil-A and then we headed over to Coastal Carolina's field for our first practice on dirt since the fall, and we didn't look too shabby taking defense out there. Hooray for nobody getting hit in the face! It was nice enough outside that we didn't even have to wear long sleeves, just our practice shirts, but that weather was very short-lived.
Friday morning we were up and out at the field all ready to play a 9:30 a.m. game against Rhode Island but after going through our hitting warm up, the monsoon hit. We tried to wait it out, but the rain kept coming down harder and harder. We kept ourselves occupied by perfecting our 2013 rap (props to Mo for writing it and spitting it) and videotaping it, of course. After about an hour, they decided to call it for the day and we were BUMMED. All we've wanted to do these past couple moths was play a game and now the rain was going to hold us back. We went back to the hotel and changed to go to lunch and about three hours later our coaches told us the games were back on, so we quickly went back to the hotel, got back into uniform, and headed off to get our work done.
We came out strong, scoring four runs in the first inning with some very timely hitting, including a three-run bomb by Lauren Moore. Brittany Gardner came out and threw a remarkable one-hit shutout and the game ended with us coming out on top 7-0. We were proud of ourselves for getting that first `W `under our belts and were ready to play our next game later that night against Coastal Carolina. But what do you know, more rain!! Our night game ended up being cancelled and so did both of our games Saturday, so we had a full day of study hours, food, and practice.
On Sunday, our prayers to the weather gods were finally answered! It felt like summer outside, and if you have seen any of our faces since we got back, you'd think we were in the Bahamas for a week because everyone is burnt to a crisp! We took the field twice that day against Coastal Carolina and despite scoring runs throughout both games, we just couldn't deliver that knockout punch. But hey, the losses this weekend are only going to make the wins we are going to get in Florida taste that much sweeter. Time to COME BACK UNTOUCHABLE, Ramblers! We depart tomorrow at noon!
P.S: Shout out to Lauren Moore for earning Horizon League Player of the Week and to Brit Gardner for earning Pitcher of the Week!!! My teammates are studs!
