CHICAGO - Shannon McGee (Chardon, Ohio/Berkshire), a freshman outfielder at Loyola University Chicago, has been named Missouri Valley Conference Softball Newcomer of the Week it was announced this afternoon by the league office. McGee is the first Rambler to earn a weekly award this season.
In four games last week, McGee hit .583 (7-for-12) with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored and an impressive .615 on-base percentage, to help Loyola to a 2-2 record. The freshman outfielder has now hit safely in each of the Ramblers’ last eight games. She batted .667 (6-for-9) with a homer and three RBIs to help Loyola take two of three games from Southern Illinois last weekend for its first MVC series win since April 2-3, 2016 versus Missouri State.
After tallying a hit against Northwestern on April 12, McGee had an impressive day at the plate as the Ramblers split a doubleheader with SIU on April 14, going 5-for-7 (.714). She opened the day with a pair of hits in a 1-0 loss, then went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI’s and two runs scored in a 3-2 win. McGee closed out the week by going 1-for-2 with a RBI and a walk in a 2-1 win over the Salukis on April 15.
For the season, she is hitting a team-best .328 (38-for-116) and also paces the club with eight doubles, 21 RBIs and 21 runs scored. At home, she is hitting a whopping .444 with two homers and six RBIs.
Loyola is 20-19 overall and 3-12 in Missouri Valley Conference action and hosts Indiana State in a doubleheader Wednesday (April 19) at 3 p.m.
