Loyola Remains Undefeated With 3-1 Win Over Indiana State|
Sept. 1, 2012
Terre Haute, Ind. - Senior Anna Eytchison recorded a match-high 21 kills and Laura Purcell added 13 as Loyola earned its fifth-straight win to open the season, 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-14, 25-19) over Indiana State this afternoon at the Jessica Barkman Memorial Classic in Terre Haute, Ind. With the win, the young Ramblers have now already surpassed their win total from last year, moving to 5-0, while the Sycamores drop to 1-4 with the loss.
Loyola got off to a nice start, grabbing a 5-2 lead on a Brittany Brown ace and extending the lead to five (11-6) after two Kathleen Vogel kills and a Vicki Wrobel ace. However, Indiana State quickly battled back, using a 7-1 run to grab a 14-13 lead and the teams would battle it out the rest of the way. A Purcell kill gave LU a 17-15 lead but, again, ISU responded and the home team held a 23-21 lead after a Rambler error. The teams traded points to 24-22 but two Eytchison kills kept Loyola alive and the Ramblers completed the comeback with a Purcell kill and a Sycamore error to escape with a 26-24 win in the opening set.
Three Eytchison kills helped Loyola jump out to a 10-4 lead in the second set and the visitors still held a 17-11 advantage after a Brown kill. However, Indiana State would storm back, rattling off the next five points to draw within one. Two straight LU points could not stem the tide as ISU scored nine of the final 11 points to even the match with a 25-21 win.
For the third time, Loyola claimed the early lead, using consecutive Indiana State errors to take a 6-3 lead. The Sycamores managed to hang around for awhile, cutting the deficit to two (12-10) after a Kyla Thomas kill. However, it was all Ramblers from there. A Brown kill made it 13-10 and Vogel served up a pair of aces in a four-point run that gave LU a 16-10 lead. Two straight ISU points were no respite for the home team as the Ramblers reeled off eight of the last 10 points, cruising to a 25-14 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Loyola carried that momentum over into the fourth set, breaking open a 7-7 game with an 8-0 scoring run highlighted by two kills apiece from Eytchison and Purcell. A Kelly Feigh kill later extended the lead to nine (19-10) before Indiana State made a run, closing to within four (20-16) after an ace. However, it was too little, too late as a Brown kill and an ISU error closed out the match.
The Ramblers hit at a .217 clip for the match and were led by Eytchison's 21 kills. Purcell added 13 kills of her own (13-2-21, .524) while Brown added 10 from her setter spot. Stephanie Kinane led the back row with 14 digs while Vogel added 12 digs and three aces.
Loyola has a quick turnaround, facing Western Illinois in a 3 p.m. match.
