Laura Purcell Named To Horizon League All-Newcomer Team

Nov. 14, 2011

CHICAGO - Freshman Laura Purcell (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team, as the League office announced its postseason awards this afternoon. Purcell, who became just the second freshman in Loyola history to lead the team in kills, is the first Rambler to be named to the All-Newcomer Team since Dana VanDiggelen in 2006.

"It is a nice honor for Laura," said head coach Chris Muscat. "She was certainly our most consistent offensive weapon and she did some great things for a freshman. We are looking forward to watching her develop and mature as an all-around player."

Purcell led the team with 286 kills (3.04 kills per set) for the season, joining Sarah Poglits (1998) as the only freshmen in program history to lead the team in kills during their rookie season. She finished sixth in the Horizon League, tops among freshman, in kills and led the Ramblers in put-aways in 15 of their 26 matches, including a streak of eight straight to open League play. Purcell recorded a season-high 19 kills on Oct. 4 against Youngstown State and ripped 17 more on Oct. 9 in a four-set road win at Wright State.

Loyola finished the season with a 4-22 record as it relied on a freshman class that accounted for over 67% of its kills for the season.
