Loyola Softball Drops 5-2 Decision To Providence

Feb. 28, 2010

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Providence (1-7) used a three-run third inning to take the lead and never looked en route to a 5-2 victory over Loyola University Chicago (1-3) this morning at the FAU Milken Tournament. Despite the setback, six Ramblers recorded a hit.

Loyola capitalized on a pair of Friar errors in the second inning to stake claim to an early 1-0 lead. Kristen Medrud ripped a one-out single to right field and moved up to third on a pair of errors on the play. Pinch runner Carly Benford spelled Medrud on the base paths and promptly stole home to provide the Ramblers with a one-run lead.

The Ramblers made that lead hold until the bottom of the third, when the tables were turned and this time a pair of LU fielding miscues helped Providence pick up three runs. Catcher Teresa Bertels' two-run single provided the big blow in the inning as Providence grabbed a 3-1 lead it would never surrender.

The resilient Ramblers scratched and clawed their way back, drawing within a run (3-2) in the sixth inning when Lauren Arceneaux singled home Brooke Andresen, who had led off with a single up the middle. But, Providence sealed the outcome when it tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of Kim Pelland's two-run home run down the left field line.

Loyola is back in action when it competes in the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., March 5-7.
